
Fixing the Glare in Ceiling Infrared Heaters
Ever turned on a short-wave infrared heater and felt like you were staring directly into the sun? It’s a harsh, blinding light. In a bathroom, that’s more than just annoying—it’s a real problem, especially for babies whose eyes aren’t as protected as ours. We figured out a way to fix this by tweaking the quartz heating element. Basically, we shift the light output so it doesn’t hit those high-intensity visible ranges. How we handle the light We use special coatings or “doped” quartz glass to filter out those aggressive wavelengths. Here’s the thing: it doesn’t block the heat. It just changes what your eyes see. The heater still sends out the infrared radiation your skin needs to feel warm, but we’ve narrowed the light peak. You get all the warmth, but none of the blinding glare. The housing and the “glow” The way the unit sits in the ceiling also helps. We’ve added frosted diffusers and angled reflectors inside the chassis. Instead of a concentrated beam shooting straight down, the light scatters. It turns into a soft, gentle glow. That way, if someone looks up, they aren’t getting a blast of light directly into their retinas. The trade-offs (and a pro tip) Now, nothing is free. Adding a coating to the quartz tube creates a tiny bit of a barrier. Because of that, you’ll see a small dip in thermal efficiency compared to a totally clear tube. To make up for it, just bump up the wattage a bit. That keeps the heat density on the floor exactly where you want it. One last thing for the installers: give these units their own dedicated circuit. When they first warm up, they pull a lot of current. If you’re putting a few of these in one bathroom on a shared line, you’re probably going to trip a breaker. Don’t let that happen.
