
Getting Rid of Cold Spots in Complex Glassware
Ever deal with those annoying “dead zones” in an annealing kiln? It’s a nightmare. You’ve got a piece of glassware with a tricky shape, and no matter how you set your heating arrays, some parts just stay cold. The geometry of the vessel basically blocks the heat. One side is glowing, the other is lagging, and that uneven stress is exactly how you get a crack right through your hard work. We fixed this by using targeted shortwave infrared lamps, but the real secret is how we hold them: SK15 ceramic holders.
Why bother with SK15 ceramics?
Look, standard plastic or cheap metal holders just can’t hack it. They burn out fast when things get hot in a kiln. We switched to SK15 ceramic sockets because they don’t warp or melt when the heat cranks up. Think of the ceramic as a shield for the electrical contacts. It keeps everything insulated so you don’t get arcing or degraded connections while the lamps are running full blast. It’s just more reliable.
How to actually get full coverage
If you want to kill those cold spots, one heat source isn’t going to cut it. You need to attack the glass from multiple angles. Because the SK15s have a compact footprint, we can squeeze them into tight, custom setups. We angle the lamps to bounce infrared energy off the kiln walls or aim them directly into the concave curves of the glass. Since shortwave IR penetrates the surface so quickly, you hit that annealing point fast. You get a deep, uniform heat soak across the whole piece, no matter how weird the shape is.
A few things to watch out for
Here is the catch: packing a bunch of IR lamps into a small space puts a massive load on your power supply. If you’re installing twenty SK15s to make sure every single cold spot is gone, your wiring has to be able to handle the current. If you skimp here, you’re going to trip breakers or, worse, overheat your lead wires. I always suggest using high-temperature silicone-coated wiring. It stops the insulation from melting right next to those hot ceramic holders. It’s a simple tweak, but it keeps the lamps humming and your glass stress-free.
